Storytelling Workshop with the Flame's Deb Williams


Celebrate your voice, and who you are! Learn the tools you need to turn your lived experience into an engaging tale—or the genesis of a one-person show. Deborah Williams—co-founder of The Flame in Vancouver and Victoria—returns to Chutzpah! to lead another friendly and inspiring workshop for experienced and first-time storytellers.

An award-winning actor, writer, and director, Deb is one of the creators of the international phenomenon known as Mom’s the Word.

This is a daylong workshop, 10am - 4pm. Space is limited.

    The Flame

    The Flame curates another moving and hilarious evening of storytelling featuring a multicultural lineup and musical guests. The Flame is a fiery, Vancouver-based grassroots storytelling series where Real People share their personal True Stories in front of a live audience, under the direction of Artistic Director and Host Deb Williams. This year's edition includes storytellers Bukkie Adewuyi, Ying Ling, Spencer Danco, Nic Enright-Morin, Jeff Rotin, Patrick Keating, and more, with musical guest LittleFox.  Eligible for ChutzPack pricing

    Where Do Stories Come From? (fun vanen nemen zikh di mayses)

    Chutzpah! joins with leading Canadian Jewish arts organization KlezKanada to create and present a new live interdisciplinary collaboration through music, poetry, visual art, and storytelling.  This world premiere concert presents new musical and visual settings for three Yiddish poems by celebrated Canadian women writers, with accompanying visual artwork in the form of “crankies” - a centuries-old art form in which an illustrated scroll, evocative of the Torah, is wound across spools set in a viewing window. Featuring performances by composer Sarah Larsson, the Vancouver Jewish Folk Choir, and participatory community chorus - the audience will be taught the song so that we can all sing together. Crankies made by artists Cesario Lavery, Ava Berkson, and Benny Ferdman will accompany the music. During the week prior to the concert, the community is invited to join in art-making workshops for all ages and abilities and an exhibition in the Sidney & Gertrude Zack Gallery in which participants will create and illustrate their own stories through this unique art form. A digital crankie gallery lets participants share their art and stories with the community.  This project is supported by the JCC Association’s Making Music Happen program.  Chutzpah!     Create a Crankie Workshops

    Crankies are a centuries-old art form in which an illustrated scroll - evocative of the Torah - is wound across spools set in a viewing window. Crankies can be as small as a matchbox or as large as a refrigerator! </p><p>In collaboration with KlezKanada, Chutzpah! has commissioned three visual artists to create large-scale crankies to accompany the new Yiddish music of the Where Do Stories Come From project. Now it's your turn! Using prompts from the inspiring Yiddish poetry of the project, or stories from your life, participants will be guided by Festival artists Ava Berkson and Cesario Lavery through the process of creating your very own crankie. </p><p>All ages and abilities are welcome, and all materials will be supplied. Festival Video Director Flick Harrison will be on hand to help you record the story of your crankie. You can opt to share your creation in our online gallery. </p><p>Co-hosted by the Sidney & Gertrude Zack Gallery This program is supported by the JCC Association's Making Music Happen grant

Led by Michael Winograd and The Honorable Mentshn and Yiddish dance expert and KlezKanada artistic director Avia Moore, this is your chance to jump into the communal joy and individual expressiveness of klezmer and Yiddish dance without fear in an open and joyful environment.New to Yiddish dance?
